Lyft paves its way by uplifting diversity
The Human Rights Campaign has chosen to recognize Lyft with its Corporate Equality Award.
The company was chosen as it has put a heavy focus on recognizing and including diverse individuals within various minority groups. Despite being newer than competitor Uber, these efforts are giving Lyft a competitive edge. Read more about that here.
Additionally, they hired someone to oversee inclusion and diversity (Tariq Meyers), hold unconscious bias trainings, began utilizing a Gender Inclusion and Affirmation Policy (providing a safe environment for transgender individuals) and have campaigned to raise money for non-profits promoting diversity.
“We partnered with leadership to draft policy that supports team members who are transitioning or are thinking of transitioning,” Meyers said according to Tech Crunch. “From making sure we have an insurance carrier that supports that or ensuring team members get paid time off in the recovery period to holding hiring managers and recruiters accountable for honoring name changes.”
In terms of fundraising, Lyft launched their “Round Up & Donate” program that lead to 75,000 users donating around $380,000 to the Human Rights Campaign.
“Lyft has been a trailblazing corporate ally to the LGBTQ community, both with its inclusive internal policies for employees and its outspoken executives who have made clear that the company strongly supports pro-equality legislation and policies across the country,” noted Deena Fidas, director of the Workplace Equality Program at the Human Rights Campaign.
While Lyft focuses heavily on diversity, they are still growing and improving themselves as a company that is comprised primarily of white people. However, their efforts to improve are clear and perhaps that is a main contributing factor in their rising popularity.
