(TULSA, OK) Actors from the touring production of Mary Poppins did a lot more than entertain during their stay in Tulsa. Last month, Poppins cast members who volunteer for the New York City based organization “Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS” collected food donations during performance dates for a local non-profit Tulsa CARES and arranged time in their busy schedule to volunteer for the organization.

Tulsa CARES (Center for AIDS Resources, Education and Support) has been delivering social services to people affected with HIV/AIDS in northeast Oklahoma for the past 21 years. Broadway Cares has been a major financial supporter of Tulsa CARES for over a decade.

“We are excited to represent Broadway Cares in Tulsa,” said Elizabeth Broadhurst, who plays Mrs. Banks, in the production of Mary Poppins.  “Broadway Cares is a major contributor to Tulsa CARES and my fellow cast members and I hope to make a difference in the community by volunteering.”

Six cast members were on hand last month to assist Tulsa CARES.

“Broadway Cares has given so much to so many throughout the AIDS epidemic,” said Sharon K. Thoele, executive director for Tulsa CARES.  “We are grateful to have all those extra hands to help us out during this holiday season.  We love working with the cast members and Broadway Cares has been such a gift to us over the years.”

Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS is one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations. By drawing upon the talents, resources and generosity of the American theatre community, since 1988 BC/EFA has raised over $195 million for essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.
