Duncan OK to provide same-sex employee benefits

The Duncan mayor and City Council will be asked to amend the city’s employee retirement plan to include spouse benefits for same-sex married couples.

The amendment is necessary to comply with federal law, City Manager Jim Frieda said.

The amendment will be considered on Tuesday when the council meets in regular session at 5:15 p.m.

Four same-sex couples have obtained marriage licenses at the Stephens County Courthouse, according to the County Clerk Margaret Cunningham.

An amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution that limited marriage to opposite-sex couples was ruled unconstitutional by a federal district judge in Tulsa in January. The ruling was upheld on appeal in July.
