Equality Kansas renews call for civility

Equality Kansas, formerly the Kansas Equality Coalition, is the state's primary LGBT rights organization.

In an email to supporters, Equality Kansas Executive Director Tom Witt renewed the organization’s call earlier in the week to respect the privacy of the family of Fred W. Phelps, as they mourn his death earlier today. Witt wrote:

“Fred Phelps is dead.

“Our position on whether or not to publicly protest, demonstrate, or celebrate his passing remains the same:  Please don't.

“Ultimately, the antics of Fred Phelps and his followers will be nothing more than an obscene footnote in the history of equal rights.

“In the end, Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church protests will not have had any impact on LGBT equality.  Our movement was making substantial progress before he began his protests in 1991, has continued to make progress over the past 23 years, and after his death we will continue to move forward.

“The best vengeance is knowing that we will prevail, his views will fail, and his life will be rendered meaningless.”
