Love cats? Have we got a show for you

Hit pause on that internet cat video long enough to see felines compete for prizes at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds in Norman, Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City Cat Club is sponsoring the all-breed cat show that will bring in about 150 cats, both pedigreed and household, who will compete for rosettes and points in the annual show.

“The points accumulate for end-of-year awards,” explains cat show manager Janis Walkingstick.

The show is sanctioned by the Cat Fancier’s Association (CFA) which is the largest registry of pedigreed cats worldwide. Just this year CFA announced the most registered breed worldwide is the Ragdoll, followed by the Exotic. Both breeds will be represented at the show along with many others. According to Walkingstick, 42 breeds are allowed to be shown in CFA shows.

“We’re going all out for our household pet class this year,” she said. “Those are the non-pedigreed cats that are judged on attributes like general health and beauty."

Walkingstick said this year some extra prizes will be awarded in the household pet class.

“The awards are for attributes like best stripes, softest belly, most unusual color and cutest ‘toe beans’ (paw pads). Generally, each cat entered has a chance to make a top ten final from each of six judges. It’s like six separate shows.”

In addition to watching the competition and speaking with breeders, spectators may also enjoy visiting vendors with items for pets and their humans and a raffle.

Hours for the show Saturday, April 6, are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Cleveland County Fairgrounds is located at 615 E. Robinson St. in Norman. Tickets are available at the door. Spectators may enjoy the show for $5 for adults; $4 for seniors (65+), military and OU students with an ID; $3 for children five to 12 years old.
