NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Manager for Merle Haggard says the country legend has died in California at age 79.

A masterful guitarist, fiddler and songwriter as well as singer, the Country Music Hall of Famer recorded for more than 40 years, releasing dozens of albums.

Haggard was known for multiple No. 1 hits, including "Mama Tried," "Okie From Muskogee" and "Big City." He was the recipient of  the Kennedy Center Honor, countless Grammys and Country Music Awards, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
