Movie about AIDS epidemic that drew protests to be rescreened

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — The Romanian distributors of a French movie about AIDS say it will be shown again after a screening was disrupted by religious protesters.

Filmmaker Cristian Mungiu said Wednesday 120 Beats Per Minute (BPM) would be shown on Feb. 20 at the Romanian Peasant Museum in the capital, Bucharest, where it was originally screened. He urged the culture minister and Bucharest mayor to publicly support the movie.

On Sunday, a handful of protesters who called themselves Christian Orthodox burst into a movie theater at the museum. Some sang the national anthem and religious songs while others held religious icons and banners reading "Romania isn't Sodom".

The film, set in Paris in the 1990s, explores homosexuality and the AIDS epidemic. It won the Grand Prize from the jury at Cannes in 2017.
