(June 24, 2016) - The ban on transgender service members may be repealed, ending almost a year of debate among the troops about how to serve openly as transgender. This decision will be announced by the Pentagon July 1.

According to USA Today, “The plan would direct each branch of the armed services over a one-year period to implement new policies affecting recruiting, housing and uniforms for transgender troops.”

Typically, the military disqualifies transgender soldiers for medical purposes. These numbers are not tracked by the Pentagon.

An anonymous Defense official told USA that top personnel officials will meet as early as next week to finalize the plan to allow transgender service members. Final approval will come from Defense Secretary Ash Carter.
