“8” performance in Tulsa to benefit OkEq & AFER

The Award-winning play “8” will be performed in Tulsa this weekend, April 25, 26 & 27 at 7:30pm.

Staff Report

Theatre Tulsa’s New Stage Company, Odeum Theatre Company and Theatre Pops are proud to collaborate on a one-weekend-only reading of “8,” a play chronicling the historic trial in the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8.

The script was written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who penned the Academy Award-winning feature film “Milk” and the film “J. Edgar”. Black’s “8” is based on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.

Profits from the production will be donated to Tulsa’s Oklahomans for Equality (OkEq) and the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER).

OkEq seeks equal rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals and families through advocacy, education, programs, alliances, and the operation of the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center in Tulsa.

Each performance of “8” will also have an interactive talkback session between the actors and audience members, featuring additional perspectives from members of the local law and religious communities.

The event will be held April 25, 26 & 27 at 7:30pm at the Tulsa Performing Arts Theatre, 101 E. 3rd St. in Tulsa. Call (918) 596-7111 for more information.
