“Check In, Reach Out”

Rainbow Youth Project USA’s initiative to support LGBTQ+ youth during the holidays

(From Rainbow Youth Project) - In light of the upcoming holiday season, Rainbow Youth Project USA has announced the launch of its 2025 “Check In, Reach Out” campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ young people during this time of year.

The nonprofit organization, known for its national suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline for LGBTQ+ youth, experiences a notable increase in calls during the holiday season, highlighting the need for support and solidarity within the community.

While the holidays are traditionally a time of celebration and togetherness, they can also be a source of pain and loneliness for many LGBTQ+ individuals. The emphasis on family and returning home may trigger past traumas and feelings of isolation, making it crucial for allies and loved ones to check in on their LGBTQ+ siblings and offer support.

Brandon Dilawari, case manager and crisis team leader at Rainbow Youth Project USA, emphasized the importance of reaching out to LGBTQ+ youth during this vulnerable time.

“The holidays can be a difficult period for many LGBTQ+ individuals, and it’s essential that we come together as a community to provide care and resources for those who may be struggling,” said Dilawari. “By checking in and reaching out to our younger LGBTQ+ siblings, we can create a sense of connection and support that is vital for mental well-being.”

Navigating the complexities of family dynamics and past experiences can be particularly challenging for LGBTQ+ individuals, as many face discrimination and rejection within their families of origin. The “Check In, Reach Out” campaign encourages allies and supporters to approach these conversations with empathy and understanding, promoting a culture of inclusivity and acceptance.

As the holiday season approaches, Rainbow Youth Project USA urges everyone to take the time to connect with the LGBTQ+ youth in their lives, offering a listening ear and resources for support. By fostering a sense of community and belonging, we can make a positive impact on the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals during this critical time.
