OKC’s Lyric Theatre premieres "Come From Away"
A Nation reflects on 25 years since September 11, 2001; Opens Sept. 16
Welcome to the Rock! Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma presents the Oklahoma regional premiere of Come From Away, the Tony Award-winning musical about the true story of 7,000 stranded airline passengers and the small Canadian town that welcomed them in the wake of September 11, 2001.
Set during the tense days following September 11, 2001, Come From Away tells the true story of 7,000 airline passengers who are unexpectedly stranded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, after their flights are diverted.
As the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, approaches, Lyric’s production brings this story to the stage through an ensemble cast portraying the passengers, crew members, and residents whose lives intersect during an uncertain moment. Featuring a spirited folk-rock score and staged at Lyric’s intimate Plaza Stage, Come From Away reminds audiences that even in uncertain times, kindness can bring people together.
“Come From Away is a story about what happens when the world stops making sense, and ordinary people choose to take care of one another,” said Lyric’s Executive Producer, Ashley Wells.
“What moves me the most about the show is that it doesn’t ask us to forget the tragedy surrounding September 11, 2001; it asks us to remember that even in moments of extraordinary fear and uncertainty, there is always an opportunity to choose generosity over suspicion, connection over isolation, and kindness over fear. Come From Away reminds us of the power that comes from simply being present for one another.”
Come From Away opened on Broadway in 2017, earning seven Tony Award nominations and winning Best Direction of a Musical. In 2013, Come From Away was selected for National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s 25th Annual Festival of New Musicals. A filmed version of the Broadway production premiered on Apple TV on September 10, 2021.
