Despite hateful legislation, Tulsa’s OkEq Health Clinic continues care

 - A statement from Tulsa’s OkEq

Oklahomans for Equality strongly opposes the passage and signing of Senate Bill 904, a measure designed to restrict access to medically necessary healthcare for transgender Oklahomans and interfere with the ability of providers to deliver evidence-based care.

While SB 904 does not appear to constitute a total statewide ban on gender-affirming care for adults, it creates significant barriers by prohibiting the use of state funds, facilities, and resources for that care. The bill places providers, clinics, and healthcare systems in an increasingly hostile and uncertain environment while continuing a pattern of legislation targeting transgender Oklahomans for political purposes.

Healthcare decisions should be made by patients, families, and qualified medical providers—not politicians. Major medical organizations across the country recognize gender-affirming care as evidence-based and medically necessary for many transgender individuals. Legislation like SB 904 does not improve healthcare outcomes; instead, it delays medically necessary care, puts families in impossible situations, and increases fear, stigma, and instability for transgender people and the providers who care for them.

At a time when Oklahoma ranks 47th in the nation for health outcomes and continues to face healthcare workforce shortages and growing mental health needs, lawmakers should focus on expanding access to care, not restricting it. Transgender Oklahomans deserve dignity, safety, and access to medically appropriate healthcare like anyone else.

Oklahomans for Equality wants our community to know this clearly: Despite continued efforts by the legislature to restrict care and harm 2SLGBTQIA+ Oklahomans, our health clinic remains open and committed to serving our community. We will continue providing gender-affirming care and connecting patients with affirming, compassionate healthcare resources. Please visit our website or call (918) 938-6537 to learn more.
