DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz hands over duties before convention

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz is stepping down, effective almost immediately. She is handing her duties to the Democratic Party temporarily over to Brandon Davis, the national political coordinator for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), who was hand-picked by Hillary Clinton.

Davis is assuming the role of Chief of Staff and will be running the DNC until a new Chair is selected at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, PA this July.

Wasserman Shultz will technically remain DNC Chair until the convention next month, but her duties will be lessened.

Scandal surrounded Wasserman Schultz during the 2016 election process, as she was accused of 'rigging' the debates in Clinton's favor. Democratic debates were scheduled for Saturday nights and Sunday football games instead of days when people would be expected to tune in, effectively keeping Clinton's name in the spotlight and further disadvantaging Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders.

Howard Dean, a former Democratic Party chairman, said the transition isn’t abnormal after a nominee emerges.

“This is in fact what happens,” Dean told CNN. “Debbie will still have the title, but somebody else will be the effective operator of the DNC. It’s Hillary’s pick.”
