Ex-governor, lawyer and 1965 graduate honored by Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Millsaps College is honoring a former Mississippi governor, a journalist, and a lawyer who helped strike down a Mississippi law that protected religious objections to same-sex marriage during its Saturday commencement.

The Methodist-affiliated Jackson college is awarding degrees to 200 students in an outdoor ceremony.

Honorary degrees are going to former Gov. Ray Mabus, lawyer Roberta Kaplan and journalist Joanne Edgar.

Mabus was governor from 1988 to 1992. He served as secretary of the Navy from 2009 to 2017.

Edgar, a 1965 Millsaps graduate, was a founding editor of Ms. magazine, working there from 1971-1989. As a Millsaps student, she participated in interracial meetings with Tougaloo College students.

Kaplan successfully argued for adoption by Mississippi same-sex couples and helped overturn the state's religious liberty law, arguing it was discriminatory.
