Family of Rutgers student receives pride award

Newark, N.J. (AP) — The mother and brother of an 18-year-old Rutgers student who committed suicide days after his roommate publicized details of his relationship with another man are recipients of an LGBT pride award.

NJ.com reports that James and Jane Clementi received the Pride Award on Tuesday from Essex County as part of its LGBTQ Pride Month celebration.

Tyler Clementi committed suicide in 2010 after roommate Dharun Ravi watched him in a sexual encounter with another man from his webcam.

Jane Clementi says her family wants to make sure there are "no other Tylers in this world" and create a "culture shift toward kindness."
