There is proof that Attorney General Jeff Sessions had two conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States during the presidential campaign season last year. This contact immediately fueled calls for him to recuse himself from a Justice Department investigation into Russian interference in the election.

Sessions did not disclose Russia meetings in his Senate confirmation. In fact, he stated he was considered a "surrogate" for the Trump campaign, but denied ever speaking to any Russian officials.

The Justice Department said Wednesday night, March 1, 2017, that the two conversations took place last year when Sessions was a senator. What is yet to be determined is at which capacity he spoke to Russian ambassador. As his position as a Senator on the Armed Services Committee, or as a Trump "surrogate."

Sessions said in a tweet, "I never met with any Russian officials to discuss issues of the campaign. I have no idea what this allegation is about. It is false"
