Officer who shot campus pride leader lacked important training

Last week, Scout Schultz, a non-binary student at Georgia Tech was shot in killed in a controversial situation. You can read more about that here.
As more questions arise about the shooting and the officers involved, a key piece of information has recently surfaced.
Tyler Beck, the officer responsible for shooting Schultz, never received crisis intervention training.
The Director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Vernon Keenan, has emphasized how important this training is as it helps officers understand how to handle individuals in “psychiatric crisis.”
“The objective is to de-escalate a situation and hopefully minimize the potential to employ force,” Keenan said.
While the training is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged by Georgia.
Currently, Beck is on paid leave while an investigation into the situation continues.
Meanwhile, Schultz’s parents are without a child and left with many questions. Read more here.
