Oklahoma Supreme Court hears arguments on abortion petition

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Supreme Court will soon have to determine whether to allow a petition aimed at outlawing abortion.

The Tulsa World reports that an Oklahoma Supreme Court referee, Greg Albert, listened to arguments during a hearing Wednesday. He'll prepare a report for the court outlining the arguments presented by both sides.

The court is being asked to determine whether the group Abolish Abortion Oklahoma has the right to circulate the petition, which would require nearly 124,000 signatures for a question to appear on the statewide ballot during the Nov. 8 general election.

Norman resident Thomas Russell Hunter filed the papers for the petition Jan. 27.

The Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union argues in a challenge to the petition filed Feb. 12 that outlawing abortion goes against the U.S. and Oklahoma constitutions.
