Revised bill would address 'improper' gender identity claims

Boston (AP) — Lawmakers are weighing revisions to a bill that would expand protections for transgender people in public places, including restrooms, in Massachusetts.

A redrafted version of a bill originally filed in the House appears aimed at addressing concerns that have been raised by critics who say the safety and privacy of women and children in bathrooms or locker rooms could be compromised if the measure became law.

The revised bill adds language that would allow legal action against anyone who "asserts gender identity for an improper purpose."

The bill would allow transgender people to use public accommodations corresponding to their gender identity.

The Massachusetts Family Institute, a group opposed to the measure, says the new language does nothing to address their concerns.

Freedom Massachusetts, a group backing the transgender bill, says it is reviewing the proposed changes.
