Last Valentine’s Day, Oklahoma Democrats celebrated the victory of Senator Al McAffrey. A gay senator at our state capitol was a milestone in Oklahoma politics. However, that senate win left his house district seat open and a fresh new face stepped in to fill McAffrey’s shoes.

Her name was Kay Floyd.

Representative Kay Floyd, was born and raised in Oklahoma and has lived in House District 88 for nearly 19 years. Last year, she faced three opponents in a primary election, easily won a Democratic run-off and sailed through the November election against her Republican opponent.

Seems like a battle, but now is when the real work begins.

“Leader Inman has assigned me to five committees and I am very honored by his confidence in me and my abilities,” said Floyd. “I’m ready to get to work on the committees and to be the voice for the people in district 88.”

Floyd has been assigned as Ranking Member for the Appropriations and Budget Committee on Common Education and the States’ Rights Committee, the House Administrative Rules Committee, Government Oversight Committee and the Appropriations and Budget Subcommittee on the Judiciary.

In a recent statement, Democratic House Leader Scott Inman said, “Rep. Floyd’s credentials are impeccable and she is a truly dedicated, honest and hardworking stateswoman, so I had no qualms about placing on her shoulders the responsibility of serving on five committees and being the Ranking Member on two. I have the utmost confidence that she will do a great job for our caucus and for the people in her district.”

“During my campaign, education was the top issue and it will remain the top issue during this session. I am allowed to file eight bills and three of those bills will deal with education issues,” added Floyd. “One of the bills is in response to the tragic statistic that the second leading cause of death in Oklahoma for school age children is suicide. The legislation I have filed will help our teachers by providing for school-wide suicide prevention programs for students and staff.”

Las July, the Gayly endorsed Floyd for HD 88 when in a statement she said, “For the past several years, I’ve seen what is happening in the legislature and it is unacceptable. People are being left behind. As a woman and member of the gay community, I will fight for civil rights.”

Floyd is well trained for her job. She has a Bachelor’s degree from OSU and a Juris Doctorate from OU College of Law. For the past 22 years, she has served as both a State Administrative Law Judge and a Special Municipal Judge. She has worked in the Senior Citizens Division of Legal Aid and served on many boards and committees in her community.

Her education, experience and passion is what it takes to be a leader in the Oklahoma Legislature.
