Stop SB 1140 before it gets to the Oklahoma House floor

SB 1140, a bill that would allow religious-based adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex couples, single people and non-Christians while still receiving tax dollars is headed to the Oklahoma House Judiciary Committee.

"To the extent allowed by federal law, no private child placing agency shall be required to perform, assist, counsel, recommend, consent to, refer, or participate in any placement of a child for foster care or adoption when the proposed placement would violate the agency's written religious or moral convictions or policies," Section one of SB 1140. Republican Sen. Greg Treat sponsored the bill and said it would protect agencies from potential lawsuits.

Treat has seen pushback on the bill.

"SB 1140 is an anti family bill which keeps children from being adopted or fostered by families other than those you narrowly define as “good”. It is anti-family, anti-Christian and immoral. You should be kicked out of office. You do not represent the views of most Oklahomans. #unconstitutional #DiversionFromTheRealIssues Knick these bums out!" said Laura Morrow of Tulsa.

"Why is OUR Legislature wasting all this time, money and energy spreading hate and making OUR state an international mockery? If this passes, OUR state will have to spend OUR taxpayer money to fight this in the court system, just to inevitably lose. WE should be outraged with what is happening at OUR capitol right now!" said Erin Hughes of OKC.
