At the start of the third day of the Democratic National Convention, Sen. Tim Kaine (D.,Va.) became Hillary Clinton's official Vice Presidential nominee by acclimation. In a suspension of the convention's rules, which state that another roll call should be utilized to formally nominate Kaine, the DNC decided to motion against the roll call.

Historically, this is not a rare case, as the DNC normally ensures that Vice Presidential picks are chosen by the Democratic nominee. The last time a nominee was declared after the start of the convention was in 1976 when Walter Mondale ran alongside Jimmy Carter.

The motion Wednesday was met with cheers of happiness. "I am pleased to inform you that Senator Kaine thanks you and he will deliver his speech later tonight," Convention Chair Rep. Marcia Fudge (D., Ohio) said.

Kaine is well-known for being a moderate Liberal in his positions as a Richmond, Va mayor, governor and senator, as well as a Democratic National Committee chairman. He was picked by Clinton July 23, just days before the DNC began. Virginia is considered a battleground state, which means secure Democratic votes is essential.

Kaine will speak Wednesday evening, his first major act as Vice Presidential candidate for the Democratic Party.
