Trump's history of promises to the LGBTQ+ community

When Donald Trump was campaigning for presidency, he made a promise to the LGBTQ+ community that he would be an advocate in office.

"As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBT citizens," Trump said during his campaign.

But, since he's been in office, many are questioning his stance on equality while he continues to approve legislation that restricts the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, especially the transgender community.

Some members of the LGBTQ+ community who supported Trump during his campaign, like Caitlyn Jenner, have rescinded their support and spoken out against Trump's actions in office.

Now, after months of legal debate, President Trump is enacting the ban on transgender people to serve in the military. Currently, there are over 15,000 transgender people serving in the military.

Jerri Ann Henry, executive director of Log Cabin Republicans, a Republican organization that advocates for the rights of LGBTQ+ people, calls this action a step back in equal rights.

"I know that this ban causes a huge amount of pain both to the military community and to the transgender community, and I know that we can do better," Henry said.

The Trump administration has also taken steps to attempt to define sex as what is specifically defined at birth - another step back for transgender rights.

"It's one thing to carry a flag," Henry said. "It's another to actually advocate for policies and enact policies that benefit a community."
