Brightmusic’s eighth annual Summer Chamber Music Festival

Intimate Portraits in Chamber Music

The Brightmusic eighth annual Summer Chamber Music Festival will be this June 6-11 in Oklahoma City. This year’s festival explores that most celebrated and cherished aspect of chamber music—its intimacy.

The production, Intimate Portraits in Chamber Music, gets up close and personal with classical music’s most intimate expression: the small ensemble—sonatas, trios, and quartets, featuring works by Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, Piazzolla and others.

“Chamber music has covered a lot of ground since Joseph Haydn developed the string quartet in the mid-18th century, but the art form remains at its very core what Goethe called ‘a stimulating conversation between intelligent people,’ with us, the audience, listening in,” said Brightmusic organizers.

Musicians appearing in these performances are Dr. Gregory Lee, Violin - Concertmaster, OKC Philharmonic; Associate Professor of Violin, University of Oklahoma.

Samuel Formicola - Violinist, OKC Philharmonic; private violin and viola teacher and chamber ensemble coach.

Dr. Mark Neumann, Viola - Violist, OKC Philharmonic; Professor of Viola, University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Meredith Blecha-Wells, Cello - Cellist, OKC Philharmonic, Associate Professor of Cello, Oklahoma State University.

Zachary Reaves, Cello - Assistant Principal Cellist, Boulder Philharmonic; Founding Member of the Althius Quartet.

Parthena Owens, Flute - Flutist, OKC Philharmonic; Instructor of Flute, Oklahoma City University.

Lisa Harvey-Reed, Oboe - Principal Oboist, OKC Philharmonic; Instructor of Oboe, Oklahoma City University (1986-2017).

Chad Burrow, Clarinet - Co-Artistic Director, Brightmusic Chamber Ensemble; Associate Professor of Clarinet, University of Michigan.

Dr. Amy I-Lin Cheng, Piano - Co-Artistic Director, Brightmusic Chamber Ensemble; Lecturer of Piano, University of Michigan.

Dr. Sallie Pollack, Piano - Piano Division Head & Associate Professor of Collaborative Piano, University of Central Oklahoma.

Ruirui Ouyang, Piano - Piano faculty, Oklahoma Conservatory of Music; DMA Candidate, University of Oklahoma.

“Chamber music is a great introduction for young people or for adults seeking to develop a deeper appreciation of classical music,” said organizers. “It is easier to follow three or four voices than, say, all the instruments in a 100-piece symphony orchestra, for example. So, bring a child or a friend who wants a rich cultural experience.”

Performances will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral, 127 NW 7th Street (at Robinson). Those with a Season Membership will be admitted you free of charge to all four Festival concerts. Children, students, and active-duty military personnel are admitted free with ID.

An all-concert Festival Pass may be purchased online by mail or at the door for $50 each. Individual concert admission is $20 per ticket. For more information about this concert or to purchase a pass, visit Brightmusic online at www.brightmusic.org.

A symphony orchestra may thrill us with the vastness of its resources, but a chamber group engages us on an entirely personal level. The musicians are wrapped in a web of intense communication with one another, and their parts, never so numerous as to confuse, project with a clarity that draws listeners in as rapt eavesdroppers on the conversation.
