California governor approves hiking ballot initiative fee

Sacramento, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation raising the cost to submit a ballot initiative in California to $2,000.

Democratic Assemblyman Evan Low of Campbell introduced AB1100 this year after an attorney submitted a ballot initiative advocating the killing of gay and lesbian people.

The current cost to file paperwork for a ballot initiative is $200. Lawmakers argued that the charge does not cover administrative costs and could encourage people to file frivolous ballot questions.

A judge in June agreed to throw out the anti-gay initiative as unconstitutional.

The Democratic governor announced signing the bill on Tuesday.
