JOPLIN, Mo. - Lead singer Shannon Low of Joplin, Missouri based Christian metalcore band, The Order of Elijah, renounced his faith after reading evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkin’s book The God Delusion.

Low announced his decision to leave his faith on his Facebook page, explaining both his entrance into faith and the reason for his leaving.

In the post Low said: “I still stuck to my guns but received a lot of flak by my spiritual peers for not understanding why the Old Testament god was so racist, ethnic cleansing, jealous as an insecure girlfriend, cruel and power hungry.”

He further explained his disconnect from the church by acknowledging the hate and bigotry this kind of religion can create:

“Sometimes I would lose Christian friends by simple pondering certain questions. I would see these same Christians publicly calling my other friends 'abominations' for being gay. The pastors making millions with feel-good sermons and theatrics, the abortion clinics being bombed…all of this cruelty justified by each particular sect in the name of their god's love. Who's god? Religion's bad attributes began outweighing [its] good.”

The Order of Elijah is now signed toa secular label and begins their “God’s Unwanted Tour” on June 10 in Joplin, Missouri with dates to follow in Oklahoma and Kansas.
