Walter Winn Burrell was born in DeWitt, Arkansas, and carried with him throughout his life the strength, faith, humor, and compassion that were shaped by his humble beginnings in rural Arkansas.

Life

Walter’s life was rooted in hard work, family, and a strong faith in God. Those values became the foundation for decades of kindness, service, and deep care for others. He was known for his quick wit, positive attitude toward life and ability to offer encouragement in simple yet unforgettable ways.

Walter loved deeply, and the passions of his life led him through many meaningful roles. He was a florist, a teacher, a bed and breakfast owner, and a nightclub owner. In each chapter, he brought creativity, warmth, and a welcoming spirit to the people around him.

Advocacy

One of the most powerful parts of Walter’s legacy was his compassion during the AIDS crisis, when he served as a selfless caregiver to many men who needed love, dignity, and support. His life and story helped inspire a nationally recognized documentary that opened doors, sparked conversations, and touched hearts about faith and the LGBTQ+ community. Through his courage and example, Walter helped expand understanding and compassion among many.

Family

Walter was preceded in death by his husband, Gregory Lee Keating; his parents, Walter David Burrell and Alice Jane C. Burrell; and his grandparents, Noel G. Burrell and Cora Lee H. Burrell, John A. Clark, and Clara K. Clark; his great-grandmother, Carrie S. Burrell; his brother-in-law, Charles Ray Keffer; his uncles, Charles Cotton Burrell and James E. Howe; and his aunt, Nancy T. Burrell.

He is survived by his sister, Terri Burrell Keffer; his niece, Stevie Nicole Malone, and her wife, Kara V. Malone; his godson, Jacob Schultz; his aunts, Diane Burrell Howe and Robin Burrell Padgett; his uncle, James E. Padgett; several cousins; and many beloved friends in Eureka Springs and across the country.

Walter’s life was a rare gift — full of laughter, wisdom, faith, service, and love. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue in the stories, memories, and hearts of all who knew him.

Service Information

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 22, at 2:00 p.m. at Nelson’s Funeral Home, 150 West Van Buren, Eureka Springs, Arkansas 72632.
