MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A Virginia man in prison for his role in helping a woman flee the country with her child rather than share custody with her former same-sex partner in Vermont says he's "privileged to stand" with the missing woman.

Kenneth Miller of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, reported Tuesday to the low security section of the federal prison in Petersburg, Virginia. He's serving a 27-month sentence for his 2012 conviction for helping Lisa Miller and her then-7-year-old daughter flee the country in 2009. The Millers are not related.

On the website Miller has used to publicize his case, he says Lisa Miller went to Nicaragua in search of religious freedom.

Sarah Star, the Vermont attorney for Lisa Miller's former partner Janet Jenkins, says Kenneth Miller is making the case all about him.
