Lawsuit filed against Fayetteville anti-discrimination vote

Fayetteville, Ark. (AP) — A Fayetteville group has filed a class-action lawsuit seeking to stop a special election on the city's proposed civil-rights ordinance to protect gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender residents from discrimination.

A group called Protect Fayetteville said Monday that it is seeking an injunction because it believes the ordinance "is in violation of state law and religious First Amendment freedoms, has a misleading ballot title and was passed without due process."

Voting for the ordinance was scheduled to be held Sept. 8 with early voting set to start Tuesday.

A hearing regarding the lawsuit has been set for Friday in Washington County.
