Same-sex couples joining the ranks of Utah foster families
Salt Lake City (AP) — Same-sex couples are stepping up to become licensed foster parents in Utah in the wake of court rulings legalizing gay marriage.
The Utah Foster Care Foundation says there are 15 same-sex couples who have volunteered to take in foster kids, forming a small but a growing portion of the nearly 1,300 licensed foster parents in the state.
The Deseret News reports that state numbers show there are 2,650 children in state custody, many of whom suffered abuse, neglect or both.
Same-sex parents were barred from becoming foster parents in Utah before the legalization of gay marriage.
New foster dads John Wright and Wilson Bateman say their three foster kids stole their hearts, and while it hasn't always been easy helping them through night terrors and developmental delays, the children are making significant strides.
