Suit alleging Catholic school gay marriage bias will proceed
Hackensack, N.J. (AP) — A judge has rejected a Roman Catholic school's request that she reconsider dismissing a lawsuit filed by a former employee who claims she was fired because she's married to a woman.
The Record (http://bit.ly/2esVyHd) reports the ruling made by Superior Court Judge Lisa Perez Friscia was made public on Friday.
Friscia initially rejected Paramus Catholic High School's request to dismiss Kate Drumgoole's lawsuit in a ruling issued in late August. Drumgoole claims the school violated state discrimination laws by firing her as dean of guidance and head coach of the basketball team after learning she married a woman.
The school has said Drumgoole was fired because she's in a same-sex marriage. Their attorney argues that it's lawful for churches to require that employees subscribe to their tenets.
