The youngest known transgender murder victim in the United States has been reported.

17-year-old Ava Le'Ray Barrin was pronounced dead Sunday after an altercation with 21-year-old Jalen Brown in Athens, Georgia.

Police report that the two knew each other prior, but the motive behind the attack is yet unknown.

Local law enforcement and news outlets have misreported Barrin's name and gender, including the Athens Banner-Herald and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, going against recommended journalistic practices for reporting on transgender people.

Both the Associated Press and GLAAD advise reporters to use an individual's preferred pronouns, with GLAAD also specifying that media should use transgender people's chosen names regardless of their current legal names.

Barrin is the 14th known transgender homicide victim of 2017 in the United States. So far this year, every victim has been a person of color, with the majority being black women.
