View shibori exhibit at Paseo's The Project Box

Kachina Leigh Martin's exhibit - "eighteen by twenty-four: six studies in indigo" - is on display at The Project Box through July 31.

(Oklahoma City, OK) - Textile artist Kachina Leigh Martin opened her exhibit of six shibori designs made in Oaxaca, Mexico using natural indigo on July 3. The show - eighteen by twenty-four: six studies in indigo – is on display at The Project Box, 3003 Paseo, Oklahoma City through July 31.

Eighteen by twenty-four combines digital images of the fabric-making process printed on handmade paper with mounted fabric shibori art pieces. Shibori is an ancient Japanese dying process that uses twisting, stitching, pulling and binding of fabric to create texture and pattern with color. Martin treats fabric as three-dimensional rather than two-dimensional, as sculpture in textile.

“When I discovered shibori, I was awed by the limitless possibilities inherent in this ancient Japanese dyeing process. Areas of pure color are seamlessly blended in an endless variety of tints and shades, revealing where color meets resist, creating a rich visual texture that transcends the notion of pattern,” says Martin.

The Project Box is open from 11 am until 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, visit theprojectboxokc.com.
