Cathedral High School in Indianapolis has announced the termination of a public teacher in a same-sex marriage, according to news sources in Indianapolis.

The school had originally planned not to fire the teacher, but the Archdiocese said they would no longer be recognized as a Catholic institution. As far as Cathedral High School is concerned, they said that is not an option for them because the two situations are a little bit different.

According to the President and Chairman of the Board at Cathedral, Brebeuf is an independent Jesuit school so they would still have support where Cathedral is affiliated with Brothers of the Holy Cross. They say a split with the church would mean no longer being able to celebrate the sacrament and losing non-profit status.

The situation is similar to that of Roncalli High School nearby who relies heavily on the Archdiocese. Last year they placed two guidance counselors on administrative leave when their same-sex marriages became publicly known, stating the two were in direct violation of the contracts they signed.

Those counselors later signed complaints with the Equal Opportunity Commission.
