PFLAG Norman honors two seniors with scholarships

PFLAG Norman regularly offers scholarships to students who support awareness of LGBT issues.

PFLAG Norman will host a reception Thursday night to celebrate its 2015 scholarship recipients.

Skyler Hoffstatter and Aryn Alderman, both graduating seniors from Norman High School, have each been awarded a $1000 scholarship toward their next educational pursuit.

The reception will be at 7pm in Room 11 of St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 1801 W. Brooks, and is open to the public as well as PFLAG members. PFLAG Norman's monthly support group, held on the second Thursday of every month, will follow the reception.

Hoffstatter will be attending the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond and Alderman has been accepted at the University of Oklahoma to major in art.

"We were both encouraged and challenged by our scholarship recipients this year," a PFLAG spokesperson said. "Each student applauded the commitment of their teachers and Norman schools for awareness of LGBT issues but also identified a need for understanding of gender variance. If a student doesn't fit into a neat binary basis of gender, they're going to feel unsafe when a school system expects them to."

PFLAG is an organization to move equality forward for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons through support, education, and advocacy. PFLAG has 350 affiliates in the United States and abroad.
