School district asks judge to dismiss bathroom policy suit

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Attorneys representing Pine-Richland School District requested that a federal judge dismiss a lawsuit regarding the western Pennsylvania district's restroom policy.

Until Sept. 13, students in the district were permitted to use restrooms that conformed with their gender identities. But the board's 5-4 vote a day prior put a policy into place requiring that students use restrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their biological sex.

Three transgender students sued the district in October and are seeking a preliminary injunction to block the policy while it's being challenged in court.

Pine-Richland filed a motion requesting that the lawsuit be tossed out on Monday.

Attorneys for the students released a statement saying that the district's hard-line stance shows how far they have strayed from its mission to educate and serve all students.
