When Meredith Worthen started The Welcoming Project (TWP), she had no idea if anyone would be interested in what they were doing.

TWP was created to encourage local businesses, organizations, and churches to display welcoming signs on their websites and in their windows to make LGBTQ individuals and allies feel welcomed as patrons.

At the age of 36, Meredith Worthen is the youngest woman ever to achieve full professor in the 115-year history of the Department of Sociology at the University of Oklahoma (OU). She is possibly the youngest woman to be promoted to full professor at the university.

With a recognized need to increase the visibility of the LGBTQ community in their city, Merideth Worthen and Brian Eddins created The Welcoming Project (TWP) in 2011.
