Students stand up to athletes for mocking transgender classmates

After a group chat between student athletes was made public, fellow classmates decided their behavior was unacceptable.

Supposedly, comments referred to transgender people as “mentally ill” and begged questions like, “If a (slur) hits you is it still hitting a woman or no?” according to The Lawrence Journal-World.

To proclaim their disgust with the comments, close to 100 students enacted an on campus sit-in to display their response.

In addition to the sit-in, a list of demands was given to school administrators. This list asked that students who had made the comments to be suspended. Also, they asked that an LGBTQ education class be made required.

Despite the sit-in, athletes that made the comments were still allowed to compete in the most recent football game.

“It wasn’t really a shock to us, but it was alarming,” Elliot Bradley, student organizer, told The Lawrence Journal-World. “It was really difficult for us to handle, knowing that these are people who represent our school.”

No decision on punishments has been made yet.
