OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 3, 2018) -- Kirk Humphreys, a member of The University of Oklahoma Board of Regents, today officially submitted his resignation to Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, effective immediately.

“Serving on the Regents has been a privilege for which I will forever be grateful. Thank you for appointing me and allowing me to serve the people of Oklahoma in this way over these past six years,” Humphreys stated in his resignation letter.

The outrage calling for his resignation began on December 10th when Humphreys publicly asserted that homosexuality is the reason for moral decline, using Barney Frank to compare homosexuality to pedophilia. Former OKC Mayor blames homosexuality for moral decline

On December 21st in a special meeting of the Regents, Humphreys said, “It is my intention to resign from the Board of Regents at the beginning of the second semester. There was not a bad outcome for me today. I am at peace. I’ve been a Sooner all my life, and I intend to do everything I can working with this board and with Sooners around the world to keep moving this University forward.”

On December 19th, Humphreys read an apology statement at a press conference.

His first apology came in a statement to the public. Is Humphreys apology too little, too late?

In addition, Humphreys has agreed to cancel the forum scheduled to be held on the OU Campus on Jan. 18, after discussions with the president of the OU Student Government J.D. Baker.

“We have discussed the matter and mutually come to the decision to cancel the forum. We agree that, with my resignation, it is in the best interest of the University, the students and the Board of Regents to focus on the presidential search process and the future of the University,” said Humphreys.
